Sounding out aksharas to make meaningful words

In the OELP Varna Samooha approach children learn to combine akshara or syllable sounds to make the written forms of their spoken word and then draw apicture to show its meaning. This method has helped children to build meaningful connections with the written form of their spoken words. In the different locations where OELP is being implemented we have come across many words constructed by children in their home languages such as Marwari, Bhojpuri, Malwi, Bengali which are based on the phonology of the Deva Nagari script, which makes us realise that the children are making inner connections with the words that they are constructing!
